ABOUT Fried Modak RECIPE

A must try Maharashtrian delicacy that is sweet,mouth watering and made from all the locally grown ingredients like whole wheat flour,jaggery,ghee,almonds the things found commonly in each household.

Ingredients Serving: 5

  1. 2 cups whole wheat flour
  2. 1 cup grated coconut
  3. 3/4 cup jaggery grated
  4. 1/2 cup dryfruits of your choice
  5. 2 tbsp ghee
  6. 1 tsp cardamom powder
  7. 1/2 tsp Salt
  8. Water to knead the dough
  9. Oil to fry the modaks

Instructions

  1. Add flour in a big bowl
  2. Add salt to it
  3. Now slowly add required amount of water to form a soft dough as you make for chapati
  4. Apply 1tsp of oil to the dough and let it rest for half an hour
  5. For the filling
  6. Place a pan on the gas stove on medium heat
  7. Add the ghee to it
  8. Let the ghee melt
  9. Add the grated Coconut and stir it for 2-3 min on medium heat
  10. Now add in grated jaggery to the pan and stir continuously so that the mixture doesn't stick to the pan
  11. Fry till the all the ingredients combine properly
  12. Now add the DryFruits of your choice
  13. Add in the Cardamom(elaichi) powder and mix well
  14. Keep stirring for 3-4 min on low flame
  15. Now remove the pan from the gas stove and let it cool
  16. For making modak
  17. Take the dough and divide it into 25 small balls
  18. With the help of rolling pin roll out small poori/circle of 2-3 inch diameter
  19. Take the poori on the palm of your hand and fill 1 tbsp stuffing in the center
  20. Now start making pleats at the edges of the poori once done bring them together and join them
  21. You can also use the mould to make the modak
  22. Make all the modak in the same way
  23. For frying the modak, place a kadhai or pan on the gas stove
  24. Add sufficient to fry the modaks
  25. Once the oil is hot slow down the flame
  26. Slowly add 4-5 modaks to the hot oil and fry them until golden brown
  27. Modak can be served hot as well as cold
