ABOUT Thenga Podi (Coconut Powder) RECIPE

Thenga Podi / Coconut Powder is an all time favorite of my hubby. Learned this easy to make recipe from my Mother in Law.

Ingredients Serving: 2

  1. 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  2. 1/4 cup white whole urad or white urad dal
  3. 5-7 dry red chillies ( +/- as per spice requirement)
  4. 1/4 teaspoon Hing
  5. 1 teaspoon white sesame seeds ( White Til) (optional)
  6. 1 tablespoon oil
  7. salt as per taste

Instructions

  1. Dry roast the coconut on a low flame in a pan till it becomes brown. Please take care not to burn the coconut. Remove and cool.
  2. In the same pan add 1 tablespoon of oil and roast the whole urad or urad dal on low flame, till it turns brown. Remove and cool.
  3. Add the chillies and Hing in the same pan and roast for 2 mintues.Remove and cool.
  4. Add all ingredients to the mixer, add salt and grind to a coarse powder.
  5. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Remove and use as needed.
  6. This Thenga podi is a great accompaniment with roti and sabzi/ Dal. Also, you can have it by mixing it with steam rice and ghee.
