ABOUT Chow Chow Bhat. RECIPE

A traditional Karnataka breakfast where kesari bhat( sweet sooji halwa) and Khara bhat( upma) is served in a combination.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. For Kesari Bhat( sooji halwa)
  2. 1 cup Chirote sooji ( thin tawa)
  3. 1 1/2 cup sugar ( can add more sugar as per taste)
  4. 3 cups of water
  5. 1 tsp green cardamom powder
  6. 1 tbsp of chopped Kaju
  7. 2 tsp of ghee , a few strands of kesar and pinch yellow colour.
  8. For Khara bhat( upma)
  9. 1 cup Rawa( sooji jada)
  10. 1/2 tsp Rai
  11. 1 tsp chana dal
  12. 1 tsp urad dal
  13. 2 tsp kaju
  14. 1/2 cup
  15. curry leaves a few
  16. 1 tbsp Chopped coriander leaves
  17. 1 tbsp lemon juice
  18. salt to taste
  19. 3 cups water
  20. 1 tsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. For kesari bhat
  2. In a Kadai add ghee. Heat it. Fry the kaju n keep aside.
  3. Add the rawa and roast in ghee on low flame tilllight pink in colour.
  4. Boil water and add sugar n let it melt.
  5. Add the sugar surup to ghee roasted sooji and mix on low flame.
  6. Add cardamom powder, kesar food colour and fried Kaju pieces.
  7. Stir well till the rawa absorbs the syrup and becomes soft.
  8. For khara bhat
  9. Add ghee in a kadai, add kaju , fry them and remove it .
  10. In the same ghee add rai, chana dal , urad dal and stir till the dals leave aroma n turn pinkish.
  11. Add sooji and stir on low flame .
  12. Boil the water and add salt to it.
  13. Once done boil water , add salt and once boiled add this to the mixture of rawa.
  14. Keep on low flame , add kaju coriander leaves and stir and serve hot. Add some lemon juice to the khara bhat.
