ABOUT Khaatkhate RECIPE

A major dish of traditional goan saraswat cooking is khaatkhate. It is highly nutritious and made from various vegetables cooked in coconut gravy

Ingredients Serving: 8

  1. Toor dal 1/2 cup
  2. Green chana or black eyed peas 1/4 cup
  3. coconut half
  4. colocasia roots 2
  5. carrots 3
  6. sweet potatoes medium 2
  7. raw banana half
  8. tindora 6
  9. brinjals small round 4
  10. pumpkin 200 gms
  11. corn1
  12. cucumber 1
  13. red chillies 2
  14. tamarind marble ball size
  15. turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  16. jaggery 4 tbsp
  17. taeflam 8
  18. salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Soak toor dal and green chana overnight
  2. Pressure cook along with hard vegetables like colocasia root and sweet potato for 1 whistle
  3. Add raw banana, carrots and corn
  4. When the vegetables are half cooked add remaining vegetables. Cover and cook till done
  5. Grind grated coconut, tamarind, red chillies and turmeric powder into a coarse paste. Add it to the cooked vegetables
  6. Hit the taeflam in mortar and pestle and add it to the mixed vegetables
  7. Add jaggery and salt to taste
