ABOUT Mochar Ghonto RECIPE

The 'Mochar Ghonto'(banana blossom curry) is a traditional Bengali preparation,where the banana flowers are cooked along with potato and aromatic spices.Mochar Ghonto is a dry curry recipe and is often served along with steaming hot rice and ghee.

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 1 banana flower,cleaned and chopped
  2. 1 potato,cubed
  3. 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  4. 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  5. 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  6. 1 teaspoon sugar
  7. 3 tablespoon boiled small brown chickpeas (chole)
  8. 2-3 green chillies
  9. 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  10. 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  11. 1/4 cup fresh coconut, crushed
  12. 2 teaspoon Ghee
  13. Salt to taste
  14. For tempering:-
  15. 4-5 table mustard oil
  16. 2 bay leaf
  17. 1 dry whole red chilli
  18. 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  19. 1 teaspoon ginger paste

Instructions

  1. 1. After the mocha flowers are cleaned and chopped into small pieces,you have to keep it submerged in water along with salt and turmeric powder.
  2. 2. Pressure-cook the mocha along with the water,salt and turmeric for 15 mins.
  3. 3. In the meantime,heat the mustard oil in a kadai.Fry potatoes and keep them aside.
  4. 4. Again heat mustard oil in the kadai,add in dry red chilli cumin seeds,bay leaves.
  5. 5. Once the seeds splutter and you get the toasted aroma of the spices,add ginger paste and fry for 2-3 mins.
  6. 6. Now add the boiled banana blossom.
  7. 7. Add turmeric powder and salt.Cover the kadai with a lid and allow it cook for 10-12 minutes on a slow flame.
  8. 8. Add cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and red chilli powder and mix well.
  9. 9. Add fried potatoes and boiled small brown chickpeas, cook till all the ingredients are soft.Also add a spoon of sugar and salt. Mix well.
  10. 10. The curry is dry,so you should wait for it to come together and continue to cook on a low flame.
  11. 11. Once done,remove from heat and add garam masala and ghee.Mix well.
  12. 12. Take out in a bowl.
  13. 13. Sprinkle crushed coconut on top.
  14. 14. Serve along with steamed rice.
