Dondakaya pachhadi is one of such recipes that was passed on by my Maternal grand ma to my maa and from my maa to me ..and i will defineltely pass it on to my daughter as well, as it is the tastiest of the lot ..This can be done in a jiffy without any pickling or preparation at all !! Goes well with Rice and tastes the best with curd rice !!

Ingredients Serving: 4

  1. 150 gms : Dondakaya / Small gourd / Tindora
  2. 3 tbsp : Urad dal
  3. 5 to 6 : Dry red chillies
  4. 1 tsp : Cumin seeds
  5. 3 nos : Garlic cloves
  6. 1/4 tsp : Turmeric
  7. Lemon sized : Tamarind , soaked in water
  8. Salt to taste
  9. 1 tsp : oil for roasting dal
  10. For tempering : 1 tbsp : Oil
  11. 1/2 tsp : mustard seeds
  12. 1/2 tsp : Cumin seeds

Instructions

  1. Firstly wash and cut the Tindora into small pieces ..we prefer dividing it into four sections and chopping it into fine triangles.
  2. Clean and Soak the tamarind in enough water for atleast 10 minutes .
  3. Boil the chopped Tindora in enough water until tender but not mushy ..we need a bite to it ..so say until 90 percent done.. Later drain the water and set aside until use.
  4. Heat up a small sauce pan with a tsp of oil ..once hot add the cumin seeds , Garlic cloves and red chillies ..fry them for a minute, later add the urad dal and saute until the dal turns golden in color..
  5. Next turn off the heat and allow to cool at room temperature..
  6. In a blender jar add the roasted , soaked tamarind , turmeric , salt and grind it into a smooth paste adding the water in which the tamarind was soaked , if required..
  7. Now in a bowl add the boiled tindora and ground paste, give it a good stir until combined.
  8. Now for the tempering ..in a small sauce pan add the remaining tbsp of oil and heat it ..later add the mustard cumin seeds ..allow them to pop and add it to the tindora mixture in the bowl.
  9. Tadaaa !! Simple yet tasty Dondakaya / Tindora Pachhadi us ready to serve with hot steamy rice !! Slurrppp !!!
