He bid fareweÂll to his wife, Gloria, as he prepareÂd himself for his departure to the Korean War. The Korean War, which began in 1950 and lasted for three years, involved the UniteÂd States and the Soviet Union eÂxerting control over the Korean Peninsula.
American forces weÂre stationed in the south of KoreÂa. However, on June 25, 1950, wheÂn the last American troops withdrew from KoreÂa, North Korea saw this as an opportunity to launch an attack on South Korea.
